Save the Rivers of Kathmandu Valley!

Bagmati river used to be important river for the people of Kathmandu Valley. It still is important but for other reasons. The whole civilization of Kathmandu valley revolved around Bagmati river and its tributaries; namely Bishnumati, Manohara, Manamati etc.

The original inhabitants of Kathmandu valley used water from these rivers for drinking, irrigation as well as every activity imaginable. However, such stories are next to unimaginable when we see pathetic state of rivers currently.

The main reason for degradation of these rivers is obviously the direct release of sewage into the open river. Along with household waste, the industrial waste is released into the water before processing of any kind. As a result of this, the whole aura of city is compromised.

Besides pollution, the flora and fauna that once thrived around the ecosystem of these rivers have now vanished from the scene. This is extremely unfortunate situation for all of us.

The authorities should take serious note of this dire situation as soon as possible. The sewage should be properly processed before being released into the water. The newly built buildings should compulsorily have safety tanks so that sewage is not directly linked up to the rivers.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has released certain guidelines which constructors shall follow before construction of new buildings. It includes safety tanks to be built at the basement of the building. Let's hope other stakeholders take this issue seriously as well.

If this issue is not taken seriously soon, it might be extremely late before the scenario is unchangeable. The adverse effect of this situation is long experienced by the people of Kathmandu. Let's hope we can see clean rivers in Kathmandu valley in the near future.
